MIMA : Maritime Institute of Malaysia

The invitation came from Cmmdr. Pierre Delbrel, Defense Attache of the French Embassy in Kuala Lumpur whom MIMA considers a close friend. MIMA has hosted several visits from French naval officers to the institute over the years to discuss about areas of mutual interest to Malaysia and France. Further underscoring the close relations enjoyed by MIMA and the French Embassy, MIMA also regularly receives invitation to attend functions at the embassy

Georges Leygues is an anti-submarine warfare destroyer commissioned in 1979.  Equipped with hull-monitored sonar, surveillance radar and anti-submarine, anti-aircraft and anti-surface torpedoes and missiles, the ship is one of seven F70-class destroyers in the French Navy fleet.
Named after legendary French Navy Secretary who rebuilt the Navy after world War II and turned it into a formidable force, Georges Leygues has certainly lived up to her weighty name.  She has had a stellar career servicing the French Navy, having seen action in various theaters such as Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf and Adriatic Sea, and being deployed in the Mediterranean for 20 years from her home base in Toulon, France.  Decommissioned in 1999, she has since served as a training vessel for cadets.
Having called at the port of Kochi in India prior to its Malaysia sojourn, George Leygues will rendezvous with French Navy'sLHD Mistral, a helicopter carrier, and sail to Jakarta.  Both vessels are involved in Mission Jeanne D'Arc, a long-term operations deployment designed to provide practical training for French Navy's midshipmen to prepare them for life as professional seafarers and naval officers.
Such invitation comes from tireless and painstaking efforts by MIMA to build and strengthen networking with its vast spectrum of stakeholders and contacts which include senior naval personnel and the diplomatic community.  By attending such social events, MIMA's researchers also have the opportunity to obtain knowledge and on-the-ground insights that can be extremely useful to their work.
